If you're a gamer, you might be excited to know that Epic Games launched its new animation technology, MetaHuman, this summer. Even if you're not a gamer, you might be interested in what this technology can do, especially when it comes to bringing characters to life.
At this year‘s Game Developers Conference, Ninja Theory, developers behind Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, showed off how they used Unreal Engine 5 and MetaHuman to bring the game's protagonist, Senua, to life in a stunningly realistic way. And the results were pretty incredible.
Melina Juergens, the performance capture artist for Ninja Theory and the actor behind Senua, demonstrated how Unreal 5 could turn simple footage captured on an iPhone into usable facial animation. MetaHuman then processed that footage to apply detailed facial animations to a 3D model of the character. The technology could even capture highly detailed facial animations in real-time, as demonstrated in the video above.
What was most impressive about this technology was how it could express subtle emotions and nuances without requiring a human to finesse it. Senua's expressions of fear, anger, and other emotions were captured in such detail that it made her feel like a real person rather than a video game character.
But while the focus of this technology was on video game development, it wasn't hard to imagine how it could be used in other fields. For example, you could imagine being able to use this technology to create more lifelike animations in movies or TV shows. Or, how about using it for training simulations in fields like medicine or engineering?
Of course, it's worth noting that this technology was still in its early stages, and it remained to be seen how it would be used in the future. But for this summer, it was exciting to see how it was being used to create more realistic characters in video games like Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.
If you were a fan of the first game or just interested in seeing what the future of video game development looked like, you kept an eye out for Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 when it eventually released for Windows PC and Xbox Series X. And who knew, maybe this technology would be used to bring other beloved characters to life in new and exciting ways."

Google Maps' Immersive View is finally rolling out to some users, according to recent reports. Tests have confirmed that Google's latest feature is up and running in select cities like Los Angeles and New York, allowing users to digitally explore these places like never before. With billions of Street View and satellite images, Immersive View builds richly detailed virtual representations of cities, offering a greater realism and interactivity than ever before. However, the feature is still limited at launch, with access only available to a small group of users.
Google Maps has been revolutionising the way we navigate cities and explore new places. And now, with the latest feature called Immersive View, it takes the experience to a whole new level. This feature is like an ultimate blend of Google Earth and Street View, allowing users to explore cities like never before.
The technology behind Immersive View uses billions of Street View and satellite images to create rich and detailed virtual representations of cities. You can now fly over streets and buildings with a greater sense of realism than ever before, as if you are in the middle of your favorite city. With the new time slider, you can even see how the city looks at different times of the day and under different weather conditions.
Although Immersive View is limited at launch to only five cities, namely London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, Google has plans to expand it further. Soon, Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, and Venice will be added to the mix, with more to come in the future. With Immersive View, Google Maps is not just a GPS app, but a gateway to virtually exploring any city in the world.

The World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland is always a gathering of some of the world's most influential thinkers and decision-makers. In 2023, The Metaverse was certainly a hot top, that begged the question, “Could the Metaverse transform society as we know it?’ As this technology continues to evolve and gain popularity, it's important for us to consider the implications it could have on society, culture, and the economy. During the event, experts in the field discussed the potential benefits, which included new ways to learn, work, and connect with others.
The Metaverse could offer immersive and engaging experiences that could revolutionise education, allowing students to explore complex concepts in a more interactive and dynamic way. It was also pointed out that the Metaverse could provide new opportunities for remote work, creating a virtual office where employees could collaborate and communicate as if they were in the same physical space.
The Davos 2023 meeting was a memorable and valuable opportunity for experts and decision-makers to come together to discuss the potential opportunities and challenges of this emerging technology. While there were concerns raised, there was also a sense of excitement and optimism about the possibilities that the Metaverse could offer. There's also the question of who will control the Metaverse. Will it be controlled by a few powerful corporations, or will it be an open platform for anyone to use? How will it be regulated, and what kind of legal and ethical frameworks will be needed to ensure it's used in a responsible and ethical way? As we look back on this event, it is clear that as we move closer to a world where the Metaverse is a reality, it's important that we start grappling with these questions now. Davos will continue to be an important forum for discussing these issues and exploring the opportunities and risks associated with this emerging technology. If we can get it right, the Metaverse could be a powerful tool for positive change.
